Boycott the Gap: Rise Up!!!
Posted by Mary Bull (chalicenew@earthlink.net)

Greetings, Forest Defenders and Social Justice Activists Around the World!
***All Hail, Returning FTAA Protestors!!!!***
On April 21 there were over 200 protests throughout the Western Hemisphere
against the Free Trade Area of the Americas (FTAA), the worst trade policy
agreement of all time. By all accounts, the violence perpetrated on
30,000--50,000 members of civil society at Quebec City--in the form of tear
gas, two-inch rubber bullets, water canons, and batons--makes Seattle look
like a picnic! Still, we emerged triumphant--the Word is Out: the Deal is
Bad. Corporate Capital persists, and we must formulate a long-term strategy
(see below for what you can do right now!).
In our struggle to save 28 watersheds--350 square miles of redwood
forestland--from the Fishers of Gap, Inc, and to guarantee Gap contract
workers un salario digno--a living wage--we also have our adversaries on the
defensive--and again, EVERYWHERE, people are rising up:
***HATS OFF to GAP ORGANIZERS AROUND THE COUNTRY, especially Karlen in
Cincinnati, Mike Rhodes & the Gap 20 in Fresno, Jenifer in Santa Rosa, Arinn
in Edmonton, Alberta (courageous, if foiled!), Kelly & Jonah in SF, and the
SRBG Core Group & Friends in San Diego & SF for pulling off EXEMPLARY GAP
ACTIONS in late April and early May!!! (Look for a new feature coming soon
at the gapsucks web site, where report-backs of Gap actions from around the
world will be posted! Send your reports to chalicenew@earthlink.net!)***
As Gap profits plummet overall (down 12%), the Fishers are anxious to turn
public opinion around--however, they are not yet willing to REALLY change
their policies (which would cut into their obscene profit
margin--$1.1billion off $11.6 billion in sales in 1999), only to make it
APPEAR that they are changing their policies: a phony "green label" for
their lethal logging practices, and most recently a puff piece on the front
page of the NY Times in an attempt to whitewash their disgusting
contract-labor practiceshttp://www.nytimes.com/2001/04/24/world/24SWEA.html
***CALL FOR GAP BOYCOTT OUTREACH VOLUNTEERS: Can you commit to 10 phone
calls to get the Gap Boycott Message out to local enviro and social justice
groups, school activist clubs, and progressive religious groups in your
town??? If so, we will WIN for Redwoods and Workers THIS YEAR!!! Download
the Outreach Packet from the Action Packet page at http://www.gapsucks.org
and /or contact 415-731-7924 chalicenew@earthlink.net for guidance!***
Meanwhile, Capitol Weekly News reported in March that CA Governor Davis has
accepted nearly $2,000,000 in campaign contributions from the Timber
Industry, including the Gap Fishers, from 1987--2000. Last summer California
Public Employees for Environmental Responsibility (CalPEER) issued a 21-page
report criticizing Davis for instructing state agencies to ignore
environmental law and approve timber harvest plans as rapidly as possible.
Davis just designed a rate-payer bail-out of So. Cal. Edison--YES, in
addition to the PG&E SWEET-HEART DEAL, we are now commanded to pony up to
another multi-billion-dollar Utility--both utilities are heavy contributors
to Davis's campaign (see below for what Californians can do about this!)
WE HIT THE GROUND RUNNING on our return from the A21 Mass Protests--there
have been SO MANY TERRIFIC ACTIONS confronting Corporate Exploitation and
Anti-culture ON SO MANY FRONTS--from May Day to Mumia--that there's been no
time to get the May newsletter out--as the following partial calendar of

Mon, May 21, Daly City: PROTEST FISHER-SPONSORED CANCER BENEFIT!
****************************************************************************
Yes, you heard right, Don and Doris Fisher are co-sponsoring a golf
tournament to benefit the Northern California Cancer Center. We say, but if
the Fishers really want to do something about the cancer epidemic, they
should STOP USING TOXIC HERBICIDES on their clearcuts in Mendocino and
Sonoma Counties!!! This has been an explosive issue around their logging
operations since they bought the land in 1998: THEY REFUSE TO STOP USING
HERBICIDES, and REFUSE TO NOTIFY THE PUBLIC when they are using them. In the
90's, Mendocino was reportedly the 4th highest county in both cancer rate
and use of herbicides /pesticides (am researching for current statistics).
Lake Merced Golf and Country Club, 2300 Junipero Serra Blvd, Daly City.
Tournament starts at 10 AM; Gala Reception & Dinner, 5PM. If I can get
enough volunteers (at least 2--4) I will be taking CARPOOLS to protest in
two shifts: 10AM and 5PM. Hopefully your work/school schedules can
accommodate one of those protests!

URGENT, NAT'L: Stop FTAA/Fast Track NOW: Contact Your US Reps!!!!!
****************************************************************************
From Global Trade Watch Alert Re the FTAA and Fast Track: ...All the
presidential palaver about freedom, protectionism, noisy protestors and the
‘moral imperative’ is just political cover for a corporate agenda of lowered
consumer protections, diminished labor rights, ecologically unsustainable
development and sweatshops. This agenda requires Fast Track (ed: Congress
abdicating their authority over trade policy decisions to the executive
branch). We urge you to go to our website – www.tradewatch.org -- and click
on the Action Page where you will find sample letters to your congress
members and to the editors of your local and regional newspapers, along with
a ‘primer’ on congressional office visits. If you would like to coordinate
your efforts with established Fair Trade coalitions (as we encourage you to
do), then click on the U.S. map and track down the organizers whose email
addresses we have posted there.
URGENT, CA: Stop the Edison Bail Out: Contact State Legislators!!!
****************************************************************************
Paraphrased from TURN Alert: Gray Davis recently announced a deal with
Southern California Edison to provide a ratepayer-funded bailout in exchange
for the transfer of the utility’s transmission lines to the state. This
back room deal contains a variety of shocking giveaways to Southern
California Edison and its parent corporation. The deal is a complete
bailout. It provides no significant benefits for the people of California,
and threatens to saddle consumers with billions of dollars in costs while
providing a huge and undeserved windfall to Southern California Edison.
(TURN has analyzed the deal and presented their analysis to the legislature.
You can access their full detailed analysis on the “News” section of TURN’s
web site http://www.turn.org.) ***The governor needs the state legislature
to sign off on the deal. PLEASE contact your state legislators and tell
them to do everything they can to SCRAP THE DEAL and STOP THE BAILOUT!!! For

May 27--30, DALLAS: Corporate Campaigner's Conference!!!
********************************************************************
Activists and organizations from all over the United States will come
together in Dallas, Texas, to the Empowering Democracy: Challenging
Corporate Power and Demanding Accountability Conference and Day of Action.
As corporate influence over the political process increases, it's becoming
harder to achieve traditional solutions for mending environmental, social
and other problems through legislative action. Campaigns to restrict the
growing power of corporations or to reform or make them accountable to the
public for their actions, called corporate accountability campaigns are
proving successful. Whether you are fighting a local corporate bully or a
giant transnational corporation, you can learn effective skills, tactics and
strategies needed to convince or require corporations to include social,
environmental and labor concerns as part of their bottom line. We can be
much more effective and powerful if we join together in planning campaigns
and/or support each other in our different campaigns and work. This is why we
are inviting you to participate in the conference. More info: Molly Rooke,

Yes, whales are STILL being killed. In fact, right now, there are Japanese
whalers on their way to the North Pacific to kill 160 of these great
creatures. Against the policies of th International Whaling Commission,
the Japanese government has allowed the commercial killing of whales to
continue. How? By misrepresenting commercial whaling as "scientific"
research. Send a letter by fax to Shunji Yanai, Ambassador of Japan and ask
that he stop the whale hunt http://junior.apk.net/~halder/poll.html
